14.00 – 16.00 hrs. Preview Brains@work

Location: Pathé Cinema, Schouwburgplein, Rotterdam. Hall 4 en foyer

Production in cooperation with Brains@work

Preview of science and technology communication program for pupils in secundary school which will take place from 25 October until 5 November 2010. Every year around 7.000 pupils follow one or more parts of the program. The preview gives an overview of the program, and is especially mend to enable teachers to make a choice of the program. Invited for the preview are school teachers, career advisors in secondary school, school directors and media.

The preview highlights:

1. ROTEB (garbage disposal company Rotterdam): about sorting and recycling garbage as a way to protect the environment and win back scarce material resources.
2. Erasmus MC: The clinical lesson, cardiological care on an international toplevel.
3. Rotterdam Polytechnic: Interactive Game Design. A 3D introduction

Followed by a press conference and a network meeting.

16.45 – 00.30 hrs. Main Program: BEST European Night of the Researcher

Location: Pathé Cinema, Hall 4 and foyer

• 16.45 hrs. Introduction by Fred Balvert, science communicator at Erasmus MC and organizer of the BEST program in Rotterdam.
• 17.00 – 18.00: Start live-connections. Handshake with the international partners: Frascati Scienza (Rome), CERN (Genève) en EDFA-JET (Oxford), followed by first interactive live report of CERN, with an explanation in the cinema by an expert of NIKHEF, who has been working at CERN.
• 18.00 – 19.00 Start information market European Night of the Researcher in the foyer with presentations of EC, Erasmus MC, NIKHEF, FOM, Brains@work and others.
• 18.05 – 18.15: Introduction Polymeal in foyer, Rotterdam chéf Rob Baris prepares buffet with ingrediënts of the Polymeal, designed by researchers of the Public health Dept. Of Erasmus MC as the opponent of the concept of the ‘Polypill’, the preventive health pill for everyone.
• 18.15 – 19.00: Buffet Polymeal
• 19.00 – 19.45: Second interactive live connection: Cardiology research of Erasmus MC, new research is presented into the effects of a new type of stent. The presentation in Rotterdam can be followed live in Geneva and Rome.
• 19.45 – 20.30: Third live connection of the latest research results from CERN with an explanation in the cinema from an expert from NIKHEF.
• 20.30 – 22.00: Information market European Night of the Researcher in the foyer with presentations of EC, Erasmus MC, NIKHEF, FOM, Brains@work and others.
• 22.00 – 22.45: Fourth interactive live connection: EDFA-JET (Oxford), the scientific quest for nuclear fusion energy, which theoretically is an alternative source of energy, but practically still has to be realised. With a presentation in the cinema by a Dutch expert from FOM.
• 22.45 – 00.00: Watching the Stars in Rotterdam. Presentation of Astronomy en Astroparticles research: Interactive connection with Frascati Scienza (Rome) and from there connections with the large telescopes in Las Palmas (Canary Islands), Tibet, Chili, Arizona. With a presentation in the cinema by a Dutch expert.
• 00.00 Neutrino’s in Ice. Live connection with observatory on the South Pole.
• 00.30 Plenary closure.

Science cafe

In the series of science cafés organized by Science4you, the young Dutch researcher Lucie de Nooij will present her research at CERN. Science4you operates the classical science café format, which means a presentation without audiovisual support and with interaction with the public.

The clinical lesson

Erasmus MC – Thoraxcenter presents top level cardiologic care in three lectures of 1,5 hour each, giving insight in the teamwork behind the screens. Directed to pupils in secondary education as well as the general public.

PlayDecide Animal Research

Location: Natural History Museum Rotterdam

Production in cooperation with Brains@work and Natural History Museum Rotterdam

Pupils of secondary school are invited to discuss animal research using PlayDecide, a decision game for which Erasmus MC has developed a special module on the topic. See: www.playdecide.eu

Session are held four times a week in the museum, with a special evening session for super-users: politicians, policy makers, teachers, curators, festival organizers, and others.

1. ROTEB: afvalscheiding en het belang ervan voor milieu en terugwinning van grondstoffen.
2. Erasmus MC: De klinische les, drie cardiologische behandelingen op topniveau.
3. Hogeschool Rotterdam: Interactive Game design.

16.00 – 16.45: Gelegenheid voor media en docenten om de organisatoren te ontmoeten.

Hoofdprogramma (17 uur- 00.30 uur): De Nacht van de Onderzoeker

Blok 1

• 16.45 – 17.00: Introductie Nacht van de Onderzoeker. Toegankelijk voor algemeen geïnteresseerd publiek en aanwezigen Brains@work-preview.
• 17.00 – 18.00: Start live-verbinding. Handshake met internationale partners: Frascati Scienza (Rome), CERN (Genève) en EDFA-JET (Oxford), gevolgd door eerste interactieve live uitzending van CERN, de deeltjesversneller in Geneve met toelichting in de zaal door Dr. Ivo van Vulpen,  onderzoeker van NIKHEF, de Nederlandse partnerorganisatie van CERN.
• 18.00 – 19.00 Informatiemarkt De Europese Nacht van de Onderzoeker in de foyer van Pathé.
• 18.05 – 18.15: Introductie Polymeal, Rotterdamse chéfkok Rob Baris maakt hapjes met ingrediënten van het polymeal, de door onderzoekers van de afdeling Maatschappelijke Gezondheidszorg van het Erasmus MC uitgevonden tegenhanger van de polypil. Zij publiceerden hierover in het vooraanstaande wetenschappelijke tijdschrift British Medical Journal. Rob Baris is een Rotterdamse kok met een rijk culinair verleden (o.a. Kantine Werklust en Montaigne). Zijn huidige restaurant is Z&M aan de Veerhaven.
• 18.15 – 19.00: Hapjes Polymeal in de foyer
• 18.30:  Eventueel nog een Q and A met CERN in Zaal 4

Blok 2

• 19.00 – 19.45: Tweede interactieve live uitzending: Cardiologie onderzoek Erasmus MC, revolutionaire ontwikkelingen op het gebied van biologisch afbreekbare stents. Dr. Peter de Jaegere presenteert nieuw, niet eerder gepubliceerd onderzoek van het Erasmus MC Thoraxcentrum.
• Deze Rotterdamse presentatie is live te volgen in Genève en Rome.
• 19.45 – 20.30: Derde interactieve live uitzending: presentatie van laatste onderzoeksresultaten van CERN, met Nederlandstalige toelichting in de zaal door Drs. Tristan du Pree, onderzoeker van NIKHEF.
• 20.30 – 22.00: Informatiemarkt De Europese Nacht van de Onderzoeker in de foyer. Met muzikale en informatieve intermezzo’s in Zaal 4.

Blok 3

• 22.00 – 22.45: Vierde interactieve live uitzending: EDFA-JET (Oxford), de wetenschappelijke speurtocht naar kernfusie-energie, die theoretisch een alternatieve energiebron oplevert, maar praktisch nog mogelijk gemaakt moet worden. Met Nederlandstalige toelichting in de zaal door Drs. Gieljan de Vries, van het FOM-Instituut voor Plasmafysica Rijnhuizen.
• 22.45 – 23.45: Sterren kijken in Rotterdam. Presentatie van Astronomie: Interactieve live verbinding met Frascati Scienza en van daaruit verbindingen met de grote telescopen in Las Palmas (Canarische eilanden), Tibet, Chili, Arizona. Met Nederlandstalige toelichting in de zaal door Prof. Dr. Huub Rottgering, verbonden aan de Sterrenwacht van de Universiteit Leiden.
• 23.45 – 00.30: Astroparticles onderzoek: Met o.a.  live verbinding met IceCube, een observatorium op de Zuidpool dat bestaat uit een kubieke kilometer ijs om het vallen van neutrino’s uit de ruimte op de aarde te meten. Met Nederlandstalige toelichting in de zaal door Prof. Dr. Nick van Eijndhoven, van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel en verbonden aan het IceCube observatorium.
• 00.30 Plenaire afsluiting met de vier locaties.

“”We hebben het einde van het universum gepland voor juli 2011. Schikt dat je?” De meeste mensen lachen een beetje als ik dit grapje maak, want ik zie er niet direct uit als een wereldvernietiger. Werken bij CERN, Het Europees instituut voor nucleaire natuurkunde, spreekt tot de verbeelding. Mijn collega’s zijn voor 85% mannen, we zijn allemaal natuurkundigen en die versneller is de koudste en leegste plek in het heelal.

De nieuwe versneller zal ons in staat stellen de huidige basis van de deeltjes natuurkunde te bewijzen of te ontkrachten. De technische kennis op CERN en de geslaagde samenwerking van veertig landen zijn uniek in de wereld. Tijdens het Wetenschapscafe zal ik spreken over het nut van de versneller, mijn drijfveren voor de wetenschap en over de basistheorieen van de deeltjes natuurkunde. Graag tot dan.”
